Mardi Himal Trek in the present day is a very thought of destination for trekking in Nepal. With the idea of providing a different perspective of exploring the same region from a different angle, this trek emerged not very long back. The trek mostly remains inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, commonly known as ACAP, but beats the influx trekking to the Annapurna Base Camp or any other famed route in the region.
Mardi Himal Trek, since the beginning, has always been overshadowed and has been more off the beaten trek. Nevertheless, beginning from a different trek put in the destination it primarily embarks on lush green forest and remains like that almost throughout. There aren’t many houses along the trail and it is perfect the way it is because it contributes to a serene ambiance.
The tea house is close to null and it is not a trek to experience culture and religion. The view, on the other hand, is a stunner. You reach an altitude of 4,500 meters, almost similar to that of the Annapurna Base Camp. The zenith of the trek offers impeccable views of the mountains Fishtail (6,993 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Hiunchuli (6,441 m), and Gangapurna (7,455 m).
Annapurna conservation is very popular for wildlife as well and since the majority of the Mardi Himal Trek falls in the same you will spot several birds. You will also have a few opportunities to witness a variety of monkeys. You will also hear a lot of stories of leopards taking their cattle and sighting snow leopard footprints on the mountains but since these animals are timid these are very rare sightings.
There are several other reasons for you to trek to the Mardi Himal Base Camp (5, 587 m). One of the few reasons is one of the best rhododendron blossoms of the season. You will witness acres of land covered with rhododendrons of a different hue. Second, you will mostly walk on the ridges after a certain point. You will walk on barren cliffs with the best views on both hands.
Finally, for the best views of Mt. Fishtail (6,993 m). Mardi Himal Trek is a short trek of medium difficulty and can be completed within a very short time. If you want to go very close to the mountain without spending a huge deal of money and in parallel without having to deal with a large crowd then the Mardi Himal Trek is the best option for you. Day 03: Drive to Pokhara
On this day we have our breakfast by 6:00 a.m. in the morning and head towards the tourist Bus Park at Thamel and board a tourist bus to Pokhara. The bus ride will take around 7 hours through curvy roads of hilly terrain with a couple of breaks in between for snacks and lunch. The drive to Pokhara on one of the major highways is exhilarating with beautiful views of never leaving tributaries, lush green hills and roadside settlements.
Day 04: Pokhara - Kande - Forest Camp (2550m)
The drive from Pokhara to Kande usually takes around 45 minutes in a private vehicle and 1 and a half hours on a bus (public). Kande is a small hilltop town on the Pokhara - Baglung highway. The drive through the scenic road, through the lush green hills and along the Seti River is beautiful. The view of mountains and Pokhara valley from Nau danda, on the way to Kande is splendid. Once we reach forest camp we begin to ascent through the forest of rhododendron and red sandalwood. Another 45 minutes of gradual ascend and descent at a slow pace we reach the Australian base camp. The views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and the fishtail are highly acclaimed. From here we descend through the same sandalwood forest for 15 minutes to Pothana and a further 45 minutes to Pitam Deurali. Pitam Deurali onwards the Mardi Himal trek officially begins and it takes 4 hours until Forest camp. The views of Dhaulagiri and Manaslu are very beautiful in this final section of the trek if the weather is on the brighter side. Overnight in Forest Camp.
Day 05: Forest Camp - Low Camp (3000 m)
We begin out of the forest camp by climbing gradually for around 45 minutes to rest camp. From rest camp, it is a gradient ascent but however the trails are not demanding. The majority of today’s walk is through the dense forest of Rhododendron. Towards the end of the day, and close to low camp, the trail becomes flat and the forest opens to a meadow land. Overnight at Low Camp.
Day 06: Low Camp - High Camp (3900m)
The day involves an uphill walk throughout. We begin uphill immediately after Low camp and traverse through sections with dense as well as patches of sparse trees. The views once in a while from the barren cliffs are beautiful. Some sections of the trek on this day are steep as well as narrow. Towards high camp the views of lush green hills entirely covered with grass are beautiful. The most beautiful views in this section come from an unnamed ridge that showcases the views of the Annapurna range, including the closer view of Machhapuchhre. The views towards the south as well are unparalleled - the Modi valley and the distant terrace fields, including the villages of Dovan, Chhomrong, Sinuwa and Ghandruk are beautiful. It takes around 5-6 hours to reach High Camp. Overnight in High camp.
Day 07: High Camp - Viewpoint - High Camp
It takes around 3 to 4 hours on this day in order to reach the viewpoint and return back to High Camp. The high camp has no food and accommodation options, which is why we pack our food to the vantage point. Except for some sections where the trail shoots up the trail is not very demanding. In one section of the trail where the trail is exposed to a steep fall on both ends, it is recommended to be extremely careful. The views once we reach the top are world-class. If we are blessed by Mother Nature and the weather remains clear we will be able to spot Annapurna I at 8091m, Annapurna South at 7219m, Himchuli at 6441m, Baraha Shikhar (Fang) at 7647m, Tent Peak at 5695m, Singu Chuli 6501m, Gangapurna 7454m, Gandarva Chuli 6248m, little summit of Annapurna III 7555m, Machhapuchre (Mt. fishtail) 6993m and Mardi Himal 5553m. Towards the South, we can see as far as Pokhara including MBC (Machhapuchre Base Camp), Deurali, Dovan, Sinuwa, Chhomrong, and Ghandruk. After spending some time on the top we return back to High Camp. Overnight in High Camp.
Day 08: High Camp to Siding (1200m)
We take the same route on our way back and all the way to Low Camp. This section includes the view of the Annapurna base camp trail. From low camp, the trail is downhill all the way to Siding. The walk is through dense subtropical forest and the chances of spotting wildlife are a high possibility. The Mountain View is somehow blocked due to the dense vegetation. It takes tentatively 5 hours to reach Siding. Overnight in Siding.
Day 09: Siding - Lumre - Pokhara
The walk from Siding to Lumre takes around 2 hours. The mountain scenery is lost at this point but however we still have beautiful views of valleys and terraced hills. The small patches of houses and people working in their fields steal the show. The walk is good on the knees and more gradual and flatter. Once we reach Lumre we board a vehicle as per our package and head towards Pokhara. It takes another 2 hours from Lumre to Pokhara and Overnight in Pokhara.
Day 10: Pokhara - Kathmandu
The bus ride takes around 7 hours to Kathmandu. The bus traverses through beautiful lush green hills and views of mountains (only in season). Once we reach Kathmandu we transfer you to your accommodation and hence officially come to the end of the Mardi Himal trek.
