Makalu Barun National Park

Makalu Barun National Park

Makalu Barun National Park is the highest protected area in the world with an elevation of more than 8000m. Established in 1992, this pristine place borders Sagarmatha National Park in the East and touches Tibet in the north. It covers an area of 1,500 km2 (580 sq mi) and spans across 2 districts: Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha. Since the altitude here varies from below 1000m to above 8000m, Makalu Barun National Park offers a diverse range of bioclimatic conditions that is highly unlikely to be found anywhere else on earth.

One of the major reasons for tourists visiting in Makalu Barun National Park is the fact, that it is a home to a large number of plants and animals’ species. It has more than 47 varieties of orchids, 67 species of economically valuable medicinal and aromatic plants, 25 of Nepal’s 30 varieties of rhododendron, 19 species of bamboo, 86 species of fodder trees and 48 species of primrose. As for the wildlife, it hosts 400 species of birds, 315 species of butterflies, 43 species of reptiles and 16 species of amphibians. Similarly, there are several endangered red pandas, musk deer, Himalayan black bears, clouded leopards (possibly snow leopard, too) in addition to the abundantly available goral, Himalayan Tahr, wild boar, barking deer, Himalayan marmot and weasel, common languor monkey and the Serow. The Arun River crossing the path’s park hosts about 82 varieties of fish. Trekking around this park offers you a stunning view of most of the world’s tallest mountains, including the fifth tallest one, Mt. Makalu.

This amazing trekking route is a must-go journey for all trek lovers. Not only is this place full of wild wonders, but it is also one of the safest route to embark upon. The decade-day long journey covers many small picturesque villages inhabited by Newari, Rai, Tamang and Sherpa people, where you are to experience each new day as a different adventure.
