Helambu Circuit Trek

    Personal Information

Helambu Circuit Trek takes you to one of the holiest lands for followers of the Buddhist religion. This is as well one of the treks which can be begun in Kathmandu and end in Kathmandu on foot. This is one completely off the beaten trek in Nepal.  Also, Helambu is the gateway to the Langtang Gosainkunda Trekking Trail which is inclusive of cascading hills, raging rivers, lush green forest of Rhododendrons, rare species of birds, animals, and some irresistible viewpoints.

Helambu circuit trek does not surpass an altitude of 3,500 meters and hence this trek does not require any acclimatization. Hence, it makes a beautiful experience for first-time hikers, kids, and senior citizens. Helambu is a culturally rich destination. Although it is a pilgrimage for followers of the Buddhist religion, this place is a melting pot of mixed races. However, from the beginning of the trek, you will notice the mani wall, a traditional wall made by Tibetan people who believe will prevent demons from entering. The chortens, mani walls, prayer flags, and Buddhist monks draped in brown robes are common sightings.

Cultural and Low Altitude Trekking Route within Langtang Region

The core inhabitants of Helambu are known as the Yolmos and they are as well known as the Sherpas. This is the second and only place after Everest where Sherpas are to be found. These settlers descended down to Nepal in the 15th century and scattered around the Helambu region. Helambu as well is considered very holy and pilgrims flock from the globe around to pay homage.

It is believed that one of the highly regarded Yogis namely Milarepa had meditated in this very land. You head out of the Gompa in the Melamchi Gaun and then drop down through the dense forest. There are several Chortens and prayer flags along the trail which is a reminder of the fact that the region has a very big Buddhist influence. Once in Tarke Ghyang, you realize how beautiful this village is, made of mostly stones. Overnight in Tarke Ghyang.

Helambu circuit trek is a pure and unsoiled trek and is kept away from the influx of trekkers. It always has and had been an off the beaten trek but full of life, culture, and colors. Trek to Helambu today and make a loop of it to see the best of what the world has yet to explore !!

A representative from Karma Eco trek will transfer you at your hotel. You can take your time to stroll around and see the surrounding of your accommodation.

Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing and Preparation

On this day we get busy with couple of things; one making the last minute paperwork for your trekking and second, sightseeing some rare UNESCO world heritage sites. Meanwhile, our backend staff will make ready all the permits to take along on the trail. Simultaneously, our guide will help you get acquainted with the country by taking you to different heritage sites. In the evening, you will be briefed about your trek either in your hotel or over the dinner.

    Day 03: Sundarijal - Chisopani

The first leg of the day is a steep climb to the peak of Shivapuri from the vehicle stop point of Sundarijal. There are two options for you to get to the top, one via the stone steps and second by the dirt trail. Once on the top of the peak through deep forest of the national park, you will descent through peaceful forest of Rhododendron to the village of Chisopani. Overnight in Chisopani.

Day 04: Chisopani - Golphu Bhanjyang aka Gul Bhanjyang

From Chisopani you will walk on and off on dirt trail and a proper trekking trail. You will make through 4 villages Pati Bhanjyang, Chipling, Lapchu Danda, Thotong respectively, before you finally reach to Golphu Bhanjyang. Part of the trail is through the forest and part of the trail makes its way through the fields of the locals. Overnight in Golphu Bhanjyang.

Day 05: Gholphu Bhanjyang aka Gul Bhanjyang - Tharepati

You embark on the trail left behind on the previous day and from here on you will not find any motorable road that leads to the higher grounds. Every spur you take towards Kutumsang the views get bigger, better and brighter. After getting your Langtang national park permits checked at Kutumsang, you will begin climbing and the trail gets steeper. Once in Tharepati the trail branches off and we take the lower route leaving the main trail to Gosainkunda. Overnight in Tharepati.

Day 06: Tharepati to melamchi gaun

Two trails branch from the village of Tharepati, one heads to Kathmandu valley and the second drops down towards Helambu. The walk from Tharepati to Melamchi Gaun is basically all forest and ruined temporary herders shelters and the grazing ground for local livestock. The views aren't as such but at times the landscape becomes beautiful. Towards the end of the trek the trail gets literally steep and very challenging. You will make your way through several chortens, prayer flags and Mani wheels until you will see Melamchi Gaun in the distance. Melamchi gaun also known as Melamchi Ghyang is pretty big enough to be called a village. Overnight in Melamchi Gaun.

Day 07: Melamchi gaun to Tarke Gyang

You head out of the Gompa in the Melamchi Gaun and then drop down through dense forest. There are several chortens and prayer flags along the trail which is a reminder of the fact that the region has a very big Buddhist influence. Once in Tarke Ghyang you realize how beautiful this village is, made of mostly stones. Overnight in Tarke Ghyang

Day 08: Tarke Ghyang to Sermathang

Sermathang is a very popular rest area that falls in the Helambu circuit. To make it to Sermathang, which takes around 4 - 5 hours, you head out of Tarke Ghyang hotel. You embark on the only trail that traverses through religiously and culturally rich Buddhist villages of Seti Ghyang and Gangyul. From the village of Gangyul you reach an unfinished road which leads in the beautiful village of Sermanthang. In Sermathang awaits beautiful views of mountains in the langtang range. Overnight in Sermathang.

Day 09: Sermathang to Baruwa village. (Camping)

It is a very short walk to Baruwa village from Sermathang and this is the last village in the Helambu circuit. Despite very close to motorable road and having 700 household and being a large village, this is least developed village. In such a huge village exists no teahouses or very basic school and facilities. Overnight in Baruwa village.

Day 10: Baruwa to melamchi bazaar (drive to Kathmandu)

The trail drops from Baruwa but more gently towards our final destination. As you leap forward towards Melamchi Bazaar, the settlements get more mixed and the villages turn into towns. Once in Melamchi Bazaar, which takes slightly above couple of hours in slow pace, you will board a vehicle to Kathmandu. When you reach Kathmandu our guide will transfer you to your hotel. Our Gosainkunda Ama Yangri trek officially comes to an end on this day. Thank you for choosing Karma eco trek as your travel partner in Nepal!
